The Promise©2014
By Havilah Tower
He goes on living like he knows to do
Getting his kicks from a morning cup, dose of the news
Anything to pick him up, to do the trick
He still holds on to those words she said,
in the back of a car many years ago
They were so in love
She’d wait for him, for how long he don’t know
Many years go by
He moves on with his life
But he never really did
He never really did
He’s a fighter but her memory knocks him down,
knocks him down but he gets back up
She’s a thriver but his thoughts turn her around,
Turn her around but she comes around
She picks up the phone half a million times
Intentions are good just to call him up, say hello
see if he thinks of her, too, she don’t know
She moved away so many years ago, things have changed
Would it be all wrong, awkward at best, was she being crazy…she don’t know
Many years go by
She moved on with her life
But she never really did
She never really did
She’s a fighter but his memory knocks her down,
knocks him down but she gets back up
He’s a thriver but her thoughts turn him around,
Turn him around but he comes around
Late December one rainy night
Walking alone when he saw her there, coming out of the store,
Just like he’d imagined times before
She didn’t know what to say
Some words escaped his mouth
Time froze the truth they share
On the way things had turned outHe’s a fighter but her memory knocks him down,
knocks him down but he gets back up
She’s a thriver but his thoughts turn her around,
Turn her around but she comes around
SHe’s a fighter but his memory knocks her down,
knocks her down but she gets back up
He’s a thriver but her thoughts turn him around,
Turn him around but he comes around
Many years go by
They move on with their lives
But they never really did
They never really did
